Dr. Jayakumar is currently serving as an Associate Professor within the Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, The National University of Malaysia (UKM). He earned his Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Hons) from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2008, graduating with a first-class honors. Then he went on to earn his doctoral degree (PhD) in neuroscience (specializing in addiction) from the University of Science Malaysia in 2015. In 2018, Dr. Kumar received a Fellowship in Addiction Medicine from the University of Malaya Centre for Addiction Science Studies

Dr. Kumar's prolific academic career is marked by 73 published articles in esteemed international journals, with 57 of these articles falling within the Q1/Q2 category. He has been a presenter at 43 national and international conferences, and has been featured as invited speaker in 28 events at national and international levels, including in live TV and Radio talk shows. He has also authored a book titled “Alcohol against brain: Why and how we study them”. He has overseen various national, international, and industrial grants. His contributions have garnered several recognitions, including awards such as the Young Investigator Award from the Asian Pacific Society of Neurochemistry, Faculty of Medicine UKM Young Investigator Award, Excellence in Service Awards from UKM and others. He has received accolades for his presentations in numerous national and international conferences. Additionally, Dr. Kumar has earned gold awards in the International Invention, Innovation, and Technology Exhibition. Dr. Kumar serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal Medicine & Health and guest editor in several international journals.

Dr. Jayakumar has over 10 years of teaching experience, having taught at both primary and secondary schools before joining the academia. He has also been awarded with Young Teacher’s Award from the Malaysian Society of Pharmacology and Physiology in 2018. He has also supervised numerous postgraduate students, including postdoctoral, PhD and Master's students. Dr. Kumar has held the position of head of the Neuroscience Module for year 2 medical undergraduates.  He has served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences-Basic Neuroscience Council from 2019 to 2021. He has chaired UKM Brain Bee Challenge, IBRO-APRC neuroscience school and served as advisor in numerous national level student activities.
